Skeletal Muscle - Anatomy & Physiology - University of Hawaiʻi Muscles attach to bones directly or through tendons or aponeuroses. Skeletal muscles maintain posture, stabilize bones and joints, control internal movement, and generate heat. Skeletal muscle fibers are long, multinucleated cells. The membrane of the cell is the sarcolemma; the cytoplasm of the cell is the sarcoplasm. Skeletal muscle tissue: Histology | Kenhub Skeletal muscle is an excitable, contractile tissue responsible for maintaining posture and moving the orbits, together with the appendicular and axial skeletons. It attaches to bones and the orbits through tendons. Excitable tissue responds to stimuli through electrical signals. Contractile tissue is able to generate tension of force.
10.2 Skeletal Muscle - Anatomy & Physiology The striations of skeletal muscle are created by the organization of actin and myosin filaments resulting in the banding pattern of myofibrils. These actin and myosin filaments slide over each other to cause shortening of sarcomeres and the cells to produce force. Interactive Link Questions

Art-labeling activity: structural organization of skeletal muscle. 11.2 Naming Skeletal Muscles - Anatomy and Physiology 2e - OpenStax Table 11.2. Anatomists name the skeletal muscles according to a number of criteria, each of which describes the muscle in some way. These include naming the muscle after its shape, its size compared to other muscles in the area, its location in the body or the location of its attachments to the skeleton, how many origins it has, or its action.
